These instructions apply to Esri's ArcGIS Pro 2.3.3 and describe how to load georeferenced Nearmap imagery using the Nearmap Web Map Service (WMS).

Rather than import a single image of a small area, WMS allows ArcGIS Pro to request the imagery directly from the Nearmap server in a variety of map projections.

We have a video on How to add a WMS connection in Esri ArcMap, which might be helpful. This is a different application, but the steps are similar.


To consume Nearmap imagery via WMS, you must authenticate using API Key Authentication.

The WMS URL you enter into your application must include your API Key. The WMS Links section of the the WMS Integration documentation describes how to copy the correct WMS URL, including your API Key, to the clipboard of your computer. Once you have done that, you can conveniently paste it into your application as required (see below).

Loading Imagery

  1. Open ArcGIS Pro.

  2. Select New Map:

  3. You will then be prompted to Create a New Project. Click OK to proceed.

  4. In the Contents window, right-click Map and select Properties.

  5. Select Coordinate System, then select the map projection or coordinate system you wish to use, then click OK. The projection you choose should match the one you plan to use from the Nearmap WMS server. For example:


    Note: It is very important that you don't skip this step, so that ArcGIS Pro knows to which projection the WMS service needs to be aligned.

  6. Go to Insert Connections New WMS Server:
  7. In the Add WMS Server Connection window enter:

  8. You should see an expandable list of available Nearmap WMS layers appear in the Catalog window. Just click and drag NearMap WMS Server onto either the map or the Table of Contents section.

  9. An expandable list of available WMS layers should now be visible in the Table of Contents window. First, right-click NearMap WMS Server and select Properties.

  10. In the Display tab of the Layer Properties window, set the Layer Image Format to JPEG and click OK. This will substantially improve performance and reduce data usage compared with PNG, at a very small cost to image quality.

  11. Now you can choose a map layer to load. Some layers are nationwide, others cover single states or cities.

    It is best to choose a single state layer because locally optimal map projections are not available for nationwide survey layers. Please refer to Natively Supported Coordinate Systems.

    Selecting the "State Latest" layer for your area of interest will always return the most recent imagery available for the area.

    Check the box for the survey you're interested in and uncheck all other boxes. 

  12. As you zoom in, higher resolution imagery will be loaded on demand.
