The Line tool allows you to measure the area of a face of a structure from an oblique photo. Follow the instructions in the articles Measure Length and Pitch on Oblique Content and Measure Height and Width if you want to measure other parts of the structure.

Note:  Measuring area on obliques is not available in Classic MapBrowser.

This guide includes the following sections:

Accessing oblique content

Go to the location you want, then switch to oblique view, either by selecting Oblique from the base layer picker (A) or by clicking VIEW OBLIQUES in the Inspector Panel (B).

Drawing the polygon

  1. Once you are in oblique view, click the Polygon tool.

  2. Zoom into the structure you want to measure, then draw around the face you want to measure, clicking once at each vertex.

Always measure a single face that has a single slope.

  3. In the Inspector Panel click Next and you will see the vertical view of that structure. Drag each vertex of the polygon to match the corners of the area you are measuring.

You will now be able to see the area and perimeter, and the slope in degrees.

You might find it helpful to click between the primary view and the secondary view when you are measuring the lines.

Once you are done, you can change to any view, and the polygon will still be there.

Tips for measuring polygons

  • Zoom in as much as possible and take your time for best results
  • For complex structures, measure each section of the structure separately, preferably as a three or four-sided polygon. Do not measure an entire structure as a many-sided polygon.
  • Where the structure has several different slopes, measure each sloped section separately.
  • Switch back to the Primary view to check line placement and orientation if you are not sure.
  • From the Photos dropdown list, you can choose another photo taken from a different direction (see image on the right).
  • Ensure you are zoomed in enough when drawing the area. Drawing the area when not zoomed in may result in a less accurate measurement. You can see an example in Tips for Measuring Lines.

Exporting image with areas

You can use the Snapshot tool to take a screenshot, which will include the polygon measurements and the survey date.

Note: The survey date in the screenshot may differ from the actual capture date of the image, as explained in  Survey Date and Photo Time.

Other ways to edit and manage measurements

There's a lot you can do on the map, from Inspector Panel, and from Layer Manager to edit and manage your measurements.
